Working Life of Salary Not Enough for UK Workers to Join Richest 10%, Report Reveals

Based on fresh analysis, the average earner in the UK would need over five decades of earnings to attain the wealth level of the wealthiest 10% nationwide.

Growing Economic Disparity Through the Years

The study analyzed wealth distribution information from the Covid pandemic period and discovered that back in the mid-2000s, it would have required nearly four decades of typical employment income to reach the top 10th of the economic ladder.

A research lead associated with the analysis observed: "Financial divides in Britain are presently so substantial that a average worker setting aside their entire income during their working years would remain unable to achieve the peak of the economic scale."

Measuring the Financial Disparity

The study found that the gap between the assets of the median citizen and an individual in the richest segment was £1m in 2006-08, but had widened to 1.3 million pounds in actual value by the pandemic years.

The researcher continued: "These gaps are especially alarming as wealth mobility in Britain is limited – those who commence life affluent tend to stay wealthy, and the opposite holds true."

Proportional Economic Disparity

Although the economic divide growing in actual numbers, the share of complete net worth in the UK held by the richest households – called "comparative financial divide" – has been "mostly consistent since the eighties," per the analysis.

During this period, complete net worth in the UK increased dramatically from triple the yearly economic output, to approximately 7.5x.

Contributors of Financial Divide

So-called "automatic" increases, through growing real estate costs and changes in pension valuations, were the primary factors of the growing financial disparity from 2010 onward, per the study.

These increases tended to accrue to senior citizens with real estate, the research shows – intensifying the intergenerational wealth divide.

Intergenerational Economic Gaps

The median economic difference between individuals aged 30-34 and people aged 60-64 grew by more than 100% in actual value, from £135,000 in 2006-08, to £310k.

Geographic Disparities

Furthermore, the study revealed stark regional variations, with the average level of assets in recent years standing at £290k in the southeastern region, where property prices have typically increased quickly, as opposed to £110,000 in the NE of England.

Health Crisis Years Impact

During the pandemic, when millions of workers were supported by the public-funded employment protection, and pandemic lockdowns curtailed consumption options, the statistics indicate numerous families were capable of accumulating, enhancing their financial standing.

Higher-income households fared much better, nevertheless. "The median home in the lowest-income quintile saw their cash reserves rise by merely £80 throughout the health crisis (across the pandemic timeframe), approximately equivalent to the two years pre-pandemic. In contrast, the average household in the highest income quintile saw their cash reserves grow by 4,200 pounds," the study reveals.
