The UK and US have reached a important bilateral deal that will guarantee no import taxes on UK drug shipments going into the US market.

Key Provisions of the Accord

Under the terms of the agreement, the UK has pledged to increase spending on medicines through the NHS. This move ensures that tariffs on these crucial goods will remain at nothing for a duration of three years.

This development is in response to recent threats to hike duties on patented pharmaceutical products, with figures discussed reaching 100%.

"This agreement between the United Kingdom strengthens the international landscape for innovative medicines and brings much-needed balance to transatlantic drug exports," a release noted.

Commercial Impact

Medicines constitute one of the the United Kingdom's biggest exports to the US, which is easily the primary market for leading British pharmaceutical firms.

Trade data reveal that in the 12 months to the end of September, the UK sold medicines totaling £11.1bn to the US. This value represented a significant portion of British export trade in that period.

"This guarantee secures employment, boosts funding and paves the way for the UK to become a international leader for biotech and pharma," a minister commented.

Specific UK Commitments

The pact includes several notable commitments from the United Kingdom:

  • Higher Cost Ceiling: The UK will raise the affordability limit at which it considers new medicines to be unaffordable by 25%.
  • Higher Drug Budget: There is a goal to increase total public funding on drugs from 0.3% of the national economy to 0.6% over the next decade.
  • Refund Ceiling: The sum manufacturers must return to the NHS to stay within budget will be capped at 15%. In the past, repayments topped twenty percent.

Industry Background

The deal takes place against a long-running tension between the sector and the British authorities over spending levels and regulatory access.

This friction were exacerbated by claims that American consumers were charged a premium for the equivalent treatments than people in the UK and Europe.

Recently, several large manufacturing plans in the UK have been halted or abandoned, while multi-billion-dollar expansions have been pledged toward projects in the United States.

A senior figure acknowledged that the NHS must increase expenditure on medicines, noting that its spending on drugs had declined as a percentage of its resources over the previous ten-year period.
