Whenever a major prize-giving event approaches, one notices a demand to include additional classifications to honor underappreciated efforts and delight the hearts of fans with niche passions.
Another commentator previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. Equally deserving are tabletop games, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize just as with other single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification supporting my request is the most urgent and important of all. This is the request: We need an award type for logic-based games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and typically start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that film award organizations don’t do it. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise within the realm of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range they barely qualify one unified medium.
To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.
Existing Game Classification System
The major gaming awards offer these genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these classifications actually cover many game types, and you can find room for numerous titles.
Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, all very different: the architectural riddles of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.
Acknowledgment Issues
There are dozens excellent brain-teasers published annually that have no home at major award shows, if they accidentally match classification types such as Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging Indie races.
- An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated for anything in 2014
- Another creative title missed out that year
- Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment recently
- Just some brain-teasers managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories
Significance of Puzzle Games
Frequently they represent small games, but the art in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles count as most engaged experiences globally and have been for over a decade.
The legendary block-stacking game rivals popular creative games competing to become best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and engaging with almost every other genre.
The Solution and Justification
Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. It would be easy to populate a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.
To emphasize again, these represent titles that otherwise have no home in important events. Logic title developers are working at the hard edge game development, developing some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait decades.
