Individuals Discontinuing Weight-Loss Injections Put On Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

New research reveals that individuals who come off new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass far faster than those who halt conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Research printed in a major health publication shows that while obese individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"People buying these drugs should be aware of the danger of rapid weight regain when the therapy ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain implies a reversion to original weight within about 18 months.

Analyzing Treatments

The study, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of these new drugs with other pills.

Researchers point out that individuals who shed pounds through dieting usually see a less rapid weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Explaining the Fast Rebound

Nutrition scientists propose the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated rebound.

The injections copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Disease?

Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

Professionals say that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the therapy is often ongoing.

This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "underscore the long-term character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Testimonies

People who have discontinued the jabs explain a intense resurgence of hunger.

"I experienced a switch that goes on and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said one woman.

The struggle is worsened if patients have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Growing Interest

Figures show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.

  • Adoption is more common among women than men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, experts stress that while the jabs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing behavioural management.
